The extraordinary garden
meteorology of moodThese last years we saw in Europe the multiplication of cultural events, festivals, fairs, biennial, sleepless nights, like a spectacular development of an always more immovable space. This is no more space which becomes the place of evolution, but time. This is no more one physical form that artist modifies but one duration, one moment, that of the spectacle, that of the few weeks of the festival. Venice opened the way, with its forma urbis unchanged since the quattrocento and whose only possible variations pass since by time, in an annual planning of the extraordinary: Carnival, Biennial, Redentore, Festa de l'Unità, Luna Park in January on Riva degli Schiavoni. What imports is no more the form in itself, but the provocation of these various moments, that which precedes, that of the event, that which follows, and especially these emotive periods which are generated there like a meteorology of mood: rejoicing, satisfaction, satiety, frustration, in a finally motionless physical space. Our proposal for Lausanne Gardens Festival 2004 is not another proposal but to put in abyss of the festival itself. This is not another garden which is proposed here the time of the festival, but rather ceaseless the expression of the change, infinite alternation, uninterrupted variation of the image of the city, its colors and its contours, over a few hours, a few days to become again finally like at the beginning. Extraordinary garden, our garden is a little more extrordinary, by varying its appearance continuously in the extraordinary time of the few months of Lausanne Gardens festival 2004. What we seek here is the elaboration of this urban meteorology of the change, ceaseless gardening of forms and moods in a finally motionless space. According to a rhythm precisely generated, according to a program determined, according to an allocated budget, the plants, the colors, the forms of a floral clump will change throughout all Festival. One day, the flowers will be blue, the following day they will be white, three hours later only nettles then nothing. Two days later, at the same place, there will be splendid roses.
