Afternoons deferred

A longing to synchronize Japan and France, approximating a spatial overlapping of Parisian temporality with that of Kyoto. Physically unachievable because of the two countries' respective positions on the globe, temporally unfeasible due to the seven-hour time difference that separates them. As such, we are forced to look to the instruments of reproduction and representation as a means to synchronization. For a Japanese morning to coincide with a Parisian morning, we have moved to the recording and diffusion of temporality deferred. The recordings are taken from DVD, VHS and 35mm materials stored in French film archives and available in Japan. Devoid of their narratives and their fictions, the nights, dawns, mornings, noons and early afternoons of Paris are refilmed, re-framed and then re-edited into a ten-hour segment.
